Our pastor, Barrie Lawless, has for some time been seeking a way, in addition to his administrative, pastoral and leadership roles within our church, to devote more time to increased synodical responsibilities, which include a liaison role between individual ELCA pastors/churches and the Synod as Dean of the Manhattan Conference, also as part of the Synod’s Commission for Evangelical Outreach and as a more involved advocate for Bread for the World. Another commitment Pastor Barrie hopes to enable is nurturing the development of El Systema here at OSA, which has the potential to enrich the lives of hundreds of children in our neighborhood -- surely the work of Christ. Pastor Barrie is also in need of a little rest every now and again!
In order to meet these obligations faithfully and effectively, Pastor Barrie has been looking for an associate, an ordained Lutheran pastor, who could take some of the preaching, administrative and pastoral responsibilities in a part- time capacity, at no additional financial burden for the congregation. For a period of many months he has searched for the person he felt would be “a good fit” at Our Saviour’s Atonement and we believe that he has found such an associate in the Rev. Martin Malzhan. Martin is a young man bursting with enthusiasm and full of great ideas and Christian inspiration. He earned a Master of Sacred Theology from Columbia University in 2010 and has recently been appointed the new Lutheran Chaplain at Columbia University. Having pastored three congregations previously, he feels called to serve in Lutheran Ministries in Higher Education and in doing further work on the roles of the church in meeting the challenges and needs of today’s world. As he pursues further studies in New York, he is very interested in working with Pastor Barrie and in the way Our Saviour’s Atonement is collaborative in so many neighborhood opportunities that build community.
We, your Church Council, thoroughly support Pastor Barrie in his endeavor and we wanted to let the entire OSA Congregation know how excited we are about Rev. Martin Malzahn, who will be our guest preacher at OSA this Sunday, July 18 at 10 a.m. Martin has begun to meet a few folks here. So far every OSA member who has interacted with him or heard him preach has come away extremely enthusiastic about the idea of his becoming a part of the OSA community as he pursues his work in Lutheran Ministries in Higher Education
Please come and hear Rev. Malzahn this Sunday, July 18 at 10 a.m., when he gives his first sermon at OSA!
